Buying property tips: Moving in a new home

Moving into your new home can be stressful. However, a little bit of organisation can go a long way toward making your move as smooth as possible. By using Choice Homes tips below, we aim to point you in the right direction and remind you of a few things that can get easily forgotten in the race to move home:

A month before the move

At this stage make sure your removal company is booked/ Book time off work
Give notice to your landlord and if you are living in rented accommodation
Have a clear out and throw away anything you don't need or give it to charity
Start collecting the newspapers, tissue paper, boxes, cardboard, wrapping and padding
Contact your telephone and utility providers to tell them you're moving
Start packing things you rarely use, and any clothing that you're unlikely to need in the next couple of weeks, e.g. if it's summer, you can pack your winter clothes
Arrange accommodation for your pets during the move

Two weeks to go

Phone the telephone company and ask them to connect the phone in your new home
Arrange building insurance and contents insurance for your new home
Tell the local authority that you're moving home
Contact your water, gas and electricity companies, at least 48 hours notice is required by both your existing supplier and your new authority
Arrange for the professional disconnection of gas cookers and any other appliances that you are taking with you (give seven days notice)
Arrange for your final telephone bill, and arrange for a telephone connection at your new home - see if you can transfer your existing number over to your new home
Cancel standing orders or direct debits from your bank account in favour of your existing house (mortgage, gas, electricity payments) and complete fresh ones for your new house
Cancel deliveries of paper, milk, and so on and pay off your accounts
Arrange for your mail to be redirected

One week left

Start packing everything else except those things you'll need between now and your move
Pay any outstanding bills
Arrange with the Post Office to have your mail redirected automatically to your new home. Redirection costs £6 for a month; £13 for three months; and £30 for a year. That is the price per surname rather than per property.
Put important and valuable items, such as passports, birth certificate and jewellery, in a safe place
Get a TV license for your new home

Your moving day

Turn off electricity, gas and water supplies at the mains at your old address
Check all appliances are disconnected
Secure all windows and doors before heading to your new home
Pack a box of essential items, such as toilet paper, a torch, a kettle, spare bulbs
Defrost the fridge and freezer
Disconnect appliances
Clean the house
Check your utility suppliers have switched on your gas, electricity and phone in your new home
On the day, pack one box with a kettle, tea bags, coffee, milk and snacks. Matches, kitchen roll, can-opener, sharp knife, cutlery, plates, screwdriver, candles, loo rolls and light bulbs are also a good idea. Keep this box with you, along with important documents, telephone numbers you may need, cash and valuables and the keys to your new house.
